Just like Huck Finn & Tom Sawyer.....
This months The Great Experiment is a childhood memory!

One of my all time favorite childhood memories is going cane pole fishing with my father. Like the days of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. We would gather our cane poles and our little green old worn out tackle box and head down to the little pond and cast our poles. We might use old stale bread or maybe even some Bologna. You didn’t have to worry about how far out you casted or about catching a big fish. A cane pole was for dropping your line directly into the water off the bank right in front of you and waiting.
Waiting with my father for a crappie or a bluegill to come along and decided what we had to offer was good enough and go for that bite. That bite that would make my pole bend over almost snapping it in half and having me flinging the fish up on shore. We would sit right there on the nice green Wisconsin grass no blanket or lawn chairs, just like Huck and Tom would have done, and talk and stare at the clouds. We might even try to find things in the clouds that was always one of our favorite games to play while sitting there waiting for our fish to bite. Our talks might lead us on a path toward the battle at Pearl Harbor {which was one of the things my father loved to talk about} or than again maybe just about me wanted to go to the roller rink with my friends that night {which I was never allowed to do}.
I remember that the days were always sunny and breezy with a strong summer smell in the air the smell of fresh cut grass and flowers blooming all around us. The weather was always nice and never hot or sticky just perfect fishing weather. We always went to the same little spot that I began to call “our place” and we always only caught a couple little keepers that would end up being our dinner that night.
When the sun was starting to set and the fire flies starting glowing we would pack up our cane poles and head home proud of our catch and proud that we had spent another day together bonding, talking and fishing. Just like the good ole’ days of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer.
